The Beauty of Genetic Conservation

While researching the subject of C. elegans I came across this interesting video on the molecular evolution of genes and proteins by the CasioPeia Project which is geared towards science educators and makes high-definition science education videos under the slogan “if you can visualize it, then understanding is not far away.” This is a great site which I definitely recommend visiting. The key message in this video is that complex organisms such as C. elegans have evolved from simpler organisms such as yeast and that genes found in yeast are found in the worm but not vice versa. The genomic conservation between species is what makes molecular biology so fascinating and allows us to appreciate the complexity of the transition between lower and higher life forms.

Did you know that a simple pubmed search of C. elegans reveals 16,734 articles written since 1963?
